• United for Health Abyssinia (UHA)

United for Health Abyssinia (UHA) is a US-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. UHA is being founded by a group of concerned professionals. The purpose of the organization is to improve the treatment and control of tuberculosis in Ethiopia. We will achieve our purpose by building the capacity of Ethiopian hospitals and communities, one hospital and region at a time. Our first project is to increase the capacity of Debre Tabor Hospital in South Gondar, Ethiopia. We will work to strengthen Debre Tabor Hospital’s capability effectively diagnose and treat tuberculosis, reach out to the community it serves, and provide the necessary support for TB patients on treatment to complete their regimens. UHA is invested in building the capacity of the hospital in collaboration with local government health offices as well as international partners working in the field.

  • Collaboration

Together we can make a difference. UHA seeks collaboration with domestic and international partners for its three core activities. First, UHA will mobilize resources and funding to help Debre Tabor Hospital construct a separate ward for the treatment of active TB patients, thus isolating infectious individuals and preventing spread to other hospital clients and healthcare workers. UHA will also work with local and international vendors to ensure the provision of masks and other personal protective equipment for staff, family members and others as necessary. Second, UHA will help train local health extension workers (HEW) to follow-up, monitor, teach, and keep track of patients. HEWs will trace defaulters, make patient’s home visit, identify problems and design solutions, raise awareness of TB, detect suspect cases, schedule appointments or refer to health facility for further treatment. Third, UHA will run community programs aimed to raise awareness of TB and treatment procedures as well as reduce TB-related stigma. HEWs may help patients to organize support groups towards this goal. Through these activities, UHA strives to empower communities to be active participants in their own health. UHA’s approach to these activities centers upon collaboration, research, education, and empowerment of patients to enhance their own health. The expertise and dedication of UHA stakeholders ensures success of activities. UHA is dedicated to ensuring all activities are integrated with government plans and other initiatives addressing TB in Ethiopia. Additionally, UHA will work to utilize existing resources and integrate activities with other health programs in the hospital when applicable.
